Honoring Luis García Urroz

LuisGarciaRetiresThursday, July 3, 2008, students, faculty and staff honored our brother, Luis García Urroz, during a special devotional held in the cafeteria on Baxter's campus.

Bro. Luis retired on June 30, 2008, and will return on July 15 to Nicaragua to work with his son, Dr. Erick Garcia, in his orphanage, clinic and Bible Institute.

We are grateful for his 10 1/2 years of service in Baxter and his great influence on many students over that period. He has been a great example of a preacher, father, husband and Christian.

We have been blessed to have him on our faculty.

Steve White, president of Association Amicus, presented Bro. Luis a plaque honoring his service to Baxter, the church and the lost of the world.

God Bless You!

UPDATE ON MARIO LARA

Many of you have asked about the status on our brother, Mario Lara.  Below is part of an email from Joe Widick, an elder at Maple Hill Church of Christ in Lebanon, Tennessee:

Mario's surgery is officially scheduled for July 9.  His sister Rubia developed an infection and the doctors wanted to make sure all was well.  It was originally scheduled for today.  We made a special plea at Maple Hill two Sundays ago and then took up the collection this past Sunday.  Money is still coming in but the initial contribution was $22, 883.44.  In all of Mario's emails he tells me God is good all the time.  That was our motto/theme and the people responded.

Please continue to pray for Brother Mario and also for his sister, Rubia, that her health will continue to improve so that she can give her brother a kidney on July 9!

Remember, too, that you can donate to this cause by sending your checks marked for "Mario Lara" to:

Keith, a member at Westover Hills church of Christ in Austin, kept up with Baxter's and the Clinic's bookkeeping until his stroke last year.

Barb's funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 20, at Westover Hills.

Our prayers go out to Keith and the rest of the family at this time.

Plane Crash in Tegucigalpa

On Friday, May 30, 2008, a TACA flight crashed by running off of the end of the runway at Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  Three on the plane were killed and a two university students on the ground was killed.  Over 60 people were injured.  This is the first crash at this airport in about 15 years.  This tragic event has shocked everyone and has closed the airport for the time being.

We need to be patient with this situation and we need to be careful about all of the rumors that are flying around about what will happen in the future.  I suspect that the airport will re-open in the near future, but I think there will be new rules related to landings.  American Airlines is working on the prospect of landing in Comayagua at a military airbase, which is about 1 ½ hours from Tegucigalpa.  Currently, flights are being rerouted to San Pedro Sula which is 4-5 hours away.

We are working with our groups to try to accommodate their needs.  We are able to send a bus from Tegucigalpa to meet groups at the airport.  The cost is about $800-900 extra depending on rental costs and the costs of fuel.  There are many variables, but we will do our best to help make this work.

Amber Foster is working with the groups to make any accommodations that we can.  Please contact her at amberinhonduras@yahoo.com or Steve White at stevewhite3@gmail.com for any questions that you may have.

Please pray for all involved in the crash and for the groups that have made plans for their trips over this summer.

Steve White
