There is a lot to see and do in and around the city of Tegucigalpa. Whether you enjoy hiking, watching local artesans at work, touring cathedrals or simply taking in the beauty of your surroundings, you will enjoy spending time in this part of Honduras. The following are a few "Attractions" in the Tegucigalpa area.

Santa Lucia still keeps its mining settlement look with narrow cobble stoned streets winding along the hillsides that in their heyday had the richest silver mine of the country. You cannot leave without visiting the church which is set up on a hill.
Other Places of Interest in the City MuseumsMuseo Nacional Villaroy is located in the Buenos Aires district of Tegucigalpa. The Museum specializes in republican history, spanning from independence in 1821 to contemporary times. It is very well kept and definitely worthwhile. The house itself was the home to one of Honduras’ presidents. Open from Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Museo Historico de la Republica. The old presidential palace of Honduras is now a museum depicting the modern history of Honduras spaning from the Independence from Spain. Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Museo del Hombre is located on Avenida Cervantes, in the old building that housed the Supreme Court of Justice in downtown Tegucigalpa. This museum houses a selection of paintings from different Honduran artists, as well as a restoration facility for antique paintings. Museo Historico Militar is located at the Valle park in Tegucigalpa, this museum houses a selection of personal objects as well as photography's of various illustrious military heroes and strongmen of Honduras. Also on display are antique and modern firearms. Sala Bancatlan (Room in Atlantida Bank) houses a private collection of valuable pre-Hispanic artifacts, coins and some of the best contemporary paintings by Honduran artists. It is located at Plaza Bancatlan on Boulevard Miraflores. Open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Museo de Historia Natural (Natural History Museum) is located at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) Biology Department. This museum offers displays of the different ecosystems of Honduras, as well as a good collection oftTaxidermy specimens of birds, mammals and reptiles of Honduras. The University is located next to the Basilica of our Lady of Suyapa (who is the patron saint of Honduras) Churches/CathedralsBasilica of Suyapa (1954) Unlike many of the colonial Spanish churches in Tegucigalpa, Hondurans built this basilica in 1954. The original Roman Catholic Church of Suyapa, built in 1980, hides in the shadows of the Basilica. The overwhelming white structure of the basilica is decorated by 12 huge stained glass windows, mirroring the gardens overlooking the city outside. The structure is made of concrete and imitates an Italian style cathedral. The colorful glass was crafted by Germans in Mexico. The Basilica has a capacity of 50,000 people. San Miguel Arcangel (around 1782) Tegucigalpa's cathedral is located in the old historial center of town and anchors Parque Central. La Merced church (around 1650) is located next to the National Art Gallery, three blocks south of Parque Central. Los Dolores church (1732) is the second largest colonial church in Tegucigalpa and was built by freed black slaves. Many consider it the prettiest--it is two blocks west and two blocks north of Parque Central. San Francisco church (around 1590) is the oldest building of any type in the city. It is located three blocks east of Parque Central. OtherGaleria Nacional de Arte (National Art Gallery) is located half a block from Tegucigalpa’s central park, adjacent to the National Congress building. This art gallery is housed in a lovely restored colonial building. An ample collection of art from the most outstanding Honduran painters is exhibited here, with outstanding paintings dating from the early colonial times to contemporary painters. Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m.; Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to noon and closed Sundays. El Teatro Manuel Bonilla (The Manuel Bonilla Theatre) is located six blocks west of the downtown cathedral. This theatre is an architectural jewel whose interior decoration was inspired from the Atheneé Theater of Paris. The theatre frequently shows plays for every taste and occasionally the National Symphonic Orchestra plays here. (For concert information, call 220-7206.) Chiminike Interactive Teaching Center opened in Tegucigalpa in 2003. The 8,500 square-meter building was inaugurated at a ceremony on Wednesday. The Center will function as an education, entertainment and cultural center for children and their families. Mall Multiplaza is located on Boulevard San Juan BoscoThe mall is a two-story, top-of-the-line mall, just like you would find in any of the biggest cities in America. overpriced and somewhat oppulent, but a nice place to feel like you are back in civilization if you have just come back from anywhere else in Honduras. The mall also has a multi-screen movie theater (Cinemark, you can find current movies on the web) on the third floor. Movies in Honduras are almost always shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Metomall opened in May 2006 and is near Toncontin International Airport. It is accessible from Boulevard Fuertas Armadas and Boulevard Comunidad Económica Europea. Mall Las Cascadas is accessible from Boulevard Kuwait and Boulevard Fuerzas Armadas. (Boulevard Kuwait is the street that runs perpendicular to the front gates of Baxter and the Clinic.) This is a very nice mall and located only 1 mile from Baxter. |

El Picacho is a mountain on the north side of Tegucigalpa. Built of concrete at the top of this mountain in 1997 is the massive statue of Christ called "Cristo del Picacho". This statue overlooks the city, with outstretched arms and is illuminated at night. At the summit of the statue is "Parque de Las Nacionas Unidas" or United Nations Park. You will find a small botanical garden with labled plants and trees and a replica of the Mayan Kukulcan Temple.
Located approximately 45 minutes from the city of Tegucigalpa is the magnificent 
handicraft showcase, another colonial and republican mining town. Because of its cool climate, it has transformed in the past 40 years into the ideal spot for the artisans to showcase their many products which have been manufactured using many local materials. One of the most appreciated is the mahogany carvings, as well as the Lenca pottery. There is no better opportunity for you to buy your souvenirs.
