NUTRITION PROGRAM Association Amicus ~ JMA Clinic Tegucigalpa, Honduras Nutrition Program Blog, Children seen in the Clinic are evaluated to determine if they are underweight as defined by the normal growth chart. If they are malnourished, they are placed in the "Nutrition Program" until a normal weight range is achieved. Churches and individuals who participate as sponsors are assigned a child and sent a photo and history of the child. The cost to sponsor a family is $30 a month, which qualifies the entire family, not just the child, to receive food approximately every 10 days. The supplemental food basket consists of soy beans and red beans, powdered milk, sugar, rice, oil, corn flour (for tortillas) and shortening, as well as any other foods which have been donated such as oatmeal, spaghetti and tomato sauce. In addition, the entire family receives free medical/dental care, medicines, vitamins and spiritual help when the mother or guardian comes for the food. Except in unusual cases, the mother or guardian is required to attend classes provided by the program. Classes in sewing and hair care enable the family to become self-sufficient, to get a better job in a factory or shop, and to better care for the family. Every three months the doctor at the Clinic evaluates the children in the program. In some isolated cases, a child does not improve because the child's state of health or malnourishment prohibits improvement. Sponsors send their support of $30 a month to the Westover Hills church in Austin, Texas, the sponsoring congregation. When a child leaves the program, we inform the sponsor that their child has left the program and assign another child. Usually a child remains in the Nutrition Program from six months to a year, depending on the child's progress. Some childen who are mentally or physically handicapped remain in the program indefinitely. Some people not enrolled in the program receive help on a circumstantial basis. Some widowed grandmothers who are raising grandchildren receive continual help. If a mother comes to the Clinic and her situation indicates that her children need food and clothes, we will help them if we can, even though they are not enrolled in the nutrition program. Some sponsors contribute to the program without being assigned a family. This allows us to help with the needs outlined above, and when we have families with no sponsor. Each year some of the mothers who participate in the Nutrition Program are baptized. In this way, the Nutrition program provides another example of integrated mission efforts, not only feeding bodies, but souls as well. There are currently 70 families enrolled in the program. The limiting factor is the number of sponsors. If you wish to sponsor a child or children, or make a one-time gift to the Nutrition Program's general fund, please send your check to the following address:
