We treated over 700 patients in the JMA Medical Clinic in February. URGENT: One thing that I have learned recently is that there are many "chronic" patients that come to JMA for their treatments and medicines. We have 26 patients who have diabetes and need to have their blood sugar tested and receive either pills or insulin for their treatments. These patients come to us on a monthly basis and the cost of their treatment is a very significant part of the costs of operations of the clinic. Another group of "chronic" patients consists of those with high blood pressure. As you know, this is a "silent killer" and those with high blood pressure rarely know there is a big problem until they have a stroke or other complications. Once again, the cost for these who make monthly visits to us is much greater than the charges the patient has to pay. If you would like to "adopt" one of these patients, please contact Steve at this email address and we will let you know the costs of the care. The average cost for those patients with diabetes is $30- $70 per month and the ones with hypertension is $20- $50 each month. There is a program for each of these at the National Hospital here, but they don't have any medicines most of the time. This is a matter of life and death, so please help if you can. There is also an address below for the Westover Hills Church of Christ where all donations should be sent. Make a notation of "Diabetes Program" or "High Blood Pressure Program". We will send you information on the individuals you are helping to save.
One of the most needed services that Dr. Cubas is providing at the Clinic is the pelvic exams and PAP smears that he is doing. The normal cost of this exam and test is about $4-5 at the "free hospital", but we charge a little over $2 and all but $.50 of that is paid for the actual lab costs. This is a very important procedure for the poor women of Honduras and we are very thankful to Dr. Cubas for coming up with this idea and taking the initiative to begin this program. If you would like to help support this program, please mark your check with "Reproductive Health Program".
We now have three dentists working in the Dental Program of the JMA Clinic. Dr. David Ayes is the supervising dentist and he has two Honduran dentists who are completing their mandatory year of social service. Our clinic qualifies to host those dentists in their social service year because we are recognized by the Honduran government as a registered facility and we have a full-time, experienced dentist to work with them and supervise their work. The JMA Dental Clinic provides full-service dental care, including fillings, cleanings and root canals. Many just provide the extraction service, but our dentists try to save teeth when they can. Again, if you are interested in knowing more or providing support for these services, please send an email to Steve White or send a contribution to Westover Hills Church of Christ at the address provided below.
The Nutrition Program continues to serve 56 families. Dr. Cubas has been re-evaluating all of those enrolled in the month of March. If a child has progressed sufficiently and the mother has received the vocational training provided, that family is removed from the program and another is added. We would love to double the size of this program this year, but we lack the resources to do that. The cost of support for the Nutrition Program is $25 per family per month. Maybe you or your family or your Bible Class would like to support some of these families. For $300 per year a family receives medical and dental care, counseling, vocational training and supplemental food and vitamins for as long as they are in the program. We will send you pictures of the child and a background on the family and all of the problems encountered.

Eulalio Mejías and his wife, Sara, are from the Dominican Republic. Eulalio ran a small store (pulperia) and Sara worked with her sister in a flower shop. They sold all their “worldly” possessions to come to Baxter Institute so that Eulalio could better prepare himself to preach the gospel. So, in January of 2005, they made the trip from their home in the D.R. to Tegucigalpa, Honduras with 2 of their children – a 4 ½ yr. old daughter, Leonela, and a 2 ½ year old son, Javes. Sadly, they had to leave their adolescent daughter, Sarai, with her grandmother, partly because they just couldn’t afford another ticket. As the year passed, they missed their daughter and wanted her with them. They will not be going home at the end of each school year for vacation as most students are able to do. It’s just too expensive. After one year away from Sarai, they longed to have her with them.
During the week of graduation in December 2005, some of our guests heard of this situation and one of our brothers from Nashville asked the other guests to donate money for Sarai to come to Honduras to be with her family. That very night, $1,200 was donated or promised and within a short time, the money was received and given to Eulalio and Sara and the process of getting Sarai’s visa began. It was a long process but on March 7, 2006, Sarai was reunited with her family at Baxter! May God bless those whose hearts were touched in a way that led them to share what they had with a girl they had never seen.
Oh, and by the way, Eulalio is one of the most effective personal evangelists Baxter has had the privilege of teaching. Truthfully, he is teaching us about the great commission. |

May 11-14, 2006 is the Baxter Seminar on campus. We are looking forward to the return of many Baxter graduates for this exceptional time of learning and renewal. Carrol Robertson from South Texas and former Baxter faculty member will be the principal speaker and we will have classes taught by local preachers. Also, World Bible School will present a class on the advantages of using their material in evangelizing the Latin world.
September 14-17, 2006 is the International Youth Meeting on campus. This is entirely planned and executed by our Baxter students and there are about 600 young people who attend from many surrounding countries and Honduras.
November 29-December 4, 2006 are the dates for the 2006 Graduation Trip for the Baxter Institute. We have a great group of men and women who will complete their training and we want to honor them and dedicate them to the work that the Lord will give them. We never know what exciting things will happen when we gather to celebrate, but we know this is a great trip to learn about the work of Baxter, the Clinic and our students who "go into all the world and preach the gospel." Plan to be there in Tegucigalpa. Start saving your money now! |
